Quietus: New Paintings by Richard Butler

From May 14 through July 3, BCB ART will exhibit QUIETUS, new paintings by RICHARD BUTLER.

With his daughter as his muse, Richard Butler depicts lush expressionistic portraits of a pensive female, who serves as a cipher for himself. Butler explains:

In a way I think all of my paintings are self-portraits in that, though the face I am painting may not be my own, the feeling

I get back from the painting is certainly an important element of my own psyche.”

Focused on the material qualities of his medium, Butler smudges, distorts, and overlays patterns onto his models’ faces, creating dynamic compositions that are both naturalistic and hallucinatory.

Butler was trained as a painter at the prestigious Epson School of Art & Design in London, but he is also known as the singer/songwriter for the acclaimed rock band, The Psychedelic Furs.

Richard Butler lives and works in New York.

A reception for the artist will be held at the gallery on Saturday May 14, from 6 to 8 pm.

Also on view will be a selection of gallery artists.

BCB ART is located at 116 Warren Street in Hudson, New York.

Gallery hours are Thursday through Sunday, 12-6 pm, and by appointment.
